THE MUST-SEE VISITS

MuCEM

Visible from the Pharo, the MuCEM is a strong sign at the entrance to the Old Port of Marseille. It is an architectural pearl, seemingly floating on the surface of the water, or rather a coral since its design is that of a section of coral rock. The sober, elegant architecture and the matt concrete respond harmoniously to the stones of Fort Saint-Jean. The facades filter the sun's rays like an oriental moucharabié.

Longchamp Palace

Located in the axis extending the famous Canebière, the Longchamp Palace is a marvel. It is a neo-classical-Second Empire style water palace from the 19th century. The back of the palace is composed of the Longchamp park, and the botanical garden. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille is located in the left wing of the palace, and the Natural History Museum of Marseille in the left wing.

Museum of the Old Charity

The Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology, the Museum of African, Oceanian and Amerindian Arts (M.A.A.O.A), and temporary exhibitions. Formerly a shelter for the city's poor and beggars, the Vieille Charité is now a true cultural centre in the heart of Marseille, in the Panier district.

THE CATHEDRAL OF LA MAJOR

It is the only cathedral built in France in the 19th century. Its spectacular dimensions are similar to those of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, which allows it to accommodate up to 3,000 people! This excess was intended to show the power of the Phocaean city, visible from the sea. Built in a Byzantine style, it is one of the largest churches in France.
